Making Your Own Classroom Passport:
This week, students will explore activities that are culturally carried
out across the United States. We believe that planning the following lessons
with your social studies teacher will greatly benefit the students, both
academically and physically. Interdisciplinary extensions to each lesson
can also involve teachers in other subject areas, such as dance, English,
language arts, foreign language, art, math, science, athletics and others
at various grade levels. For some possibilities to explore cross-discipline
collaboration: contact the social studies teacher to plan for the week together;
gather historical, cultural, and literature information to integrate into
the lessons; prepare students prior to May to develop awareness for NASPE
materials and documents for advocacy; and incorporate journal writing during
each leg of the activities.
Schools may choose to use the passport for May Week Activities by:
- Using the template provided, edit the template by including your
school logo, number of steps, types of activities, or more journal
space.
- Use a drawing of the United States and create your own pit stops
to study information in that area while collecting steps across America-connect
these to areas studied in class.
- Consider integrating estimation activities through the use of
pedometers.
- Create a personal passport:
- Place the 8 x 11 pieces of paper together and fold them
in half with a sharp crease down the middle. (Fold again
to make a card passport.)
- Glue a personal photo to the front of the passport, add
name, and decorate, or student can draw and decorate the
passport.
- Challenge kids to use information technology to make a passport.
- Using the template for postcards as a passport.
Consider using a stamp, hole punch, sticker, or sign off for the students
as they complete the May Week Activities on the passport. An effective passport
would help students have a portfolio of information regarding the activities
they participated in through National Physical Education and Sport Week.
