Homemade Ice Packs

NASPE/NCAT Sport Injury Resource

Recipe

Supplies:
Plastic Freezer bags (½ to 1 gallon size)
Water
Rubbing Alcohol

Directions: Add water and alcohol to a freezer bag in a ratio of 2:1
(2 parts water to 1 part rubbing alcohol or 3 parts water to 1 ½ parts alcohol). Add more alcohol for a slushier cold pack. Cold packs can be stored in the freezer up to one month. Use double baggies for leakage control.
The cold pack will conform to any body area because the rubbing alcohol prevents the water from completely freezing.
As with any commercial cold pack, make sure the skin is covered with a towel prior to application.

Hint:
An unopened frozen bag of peas, corn, or blueberries is another fast way to apply a cold pack to an injured area.
